Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden announce winter 2019 community workshop schedule

Check out the upcoming series of winter workshops on fruit tree care, gardening skills, and chicken keeping.

Learn to select, plant, and care for blueberries at a workshop taught by UCSC Farm garden manager Christof Bernau.

The Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden will offer a series of 2019 community workshops this winter that cover fruit tree care, gardening techniques, and chicken keeping. Build your skill set and learn organic techniques to enhance your backyard or community garden.

Workshop instructors include Matthew Sutton, founder and owner of Orchard Keepers, Christof Bernau, garden manager at the UCSC Farm, Laura Sasso, a graduate of the advanced apprenticeship at the UCSC Farm & Garden, and UC Master Gardener Candice McLaren.

Workshops are geared to beginning and intermediate fruit tree growers, gardeners, and chicken keepers, although all experience levels are welcome to attend.

2019 Winter Workshop schedule 

  • January 12, 10 am – 12 pm: Free Fruit Tree Q&A Session
    San Lorenzo Garden Center, 235 River Street, Santa Cruz

  • January 19, 10 am – 12 pm: Free Fruit Tree Q&A Session
    The Garden Company, 2218 Mission Street, Santa Cruz

  • January 26, 9:30 am – 12 pm: Winter Fruit Tree Care: Pruning & More!
    UC Santa Cruz Farm
     
  • February 3, 9:30 am – 12 pm: Sowing Seeds: Starting a Successful Spring Garden
    Hay Barn, UC Santa Cruz 

  • February 16, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm: Blueberries for the Home Garden & Small Farm
    Hay Barn and UCSC Farm, UC Santa Cruz
     
  • March 9, 9:30 am – 11:30 am: Chix in the City, Hens in the Hood
    Hay Barn and UCSC Farm, UC Santa Cruz

And coming on April 13, there will be a new workshop on growing organic hops and hop trellis design for the home gardener offered at the Alan Chadwick Garden at UC Santa Cruz.
