The UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) is hiring for an Apprenticeship and Short Course coordinator position to direct and coordinate CASFS practical education programs that provide training in the foundations of organic gardening and farming with an agroecological lens.
The Center's Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture has provided training in the concepts and practices of organic gardening and small-scale farming for more than 50 years. The residential 10-week program covers topics including soil health and cultivation, plant physiology, and crop production and distribution, while considering the social/political context in which food is grown. CASFS’s intensive Short Courses provide intermediate and experienced gardeners and farmers hands-on, land-based professional development and skill-building opportunities focused on specialized agricultural topics.
The CASFS Apprenticeship and Short Course coordinator will be responsible for managing these educational programs, serving diverse audiences and playing a key role in curriculum development, course logistics and outreach. The incumbent will provide leadership in the design, development, implementation, coordination, assessment, and continuous improvement of CASFS practical training programs and services. Course design and curriculum delivery will be informed by organic and agroecological methods and be guided by principles of equity and justice in the food system. Extensive knowledge of organic agriculture, food systems change and curriculum design is required.
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual with a background in curriculum development and delivery, especially in the arenas of organic agriculture, agroecology, and food systems. A strong preference will be given for individuals whose past work involves building curriculum that centers equity and justice, and prioritizes meeting the needs of diverse learner communities. This is a full-time, year-round, career position that involves three principal sets of responsibilities: 1) curriculum development, course design, program evaluation, and course refinement, 2) coordination of course logistics, systems and budgets, and 3) outreach, recruitment, selection and retention of program participants.
